Short definition

The AI Office is a Commission body responsible exclusively for the direct supervision, at Union level, of providers of general-purpose AI (GPAI) models. An average Hungarian company should approach the national market surveillance authority, not the AI Office — the AI Office does not act in individual company matters.

Its competence is set out in Articles 64–70, 73, 85 and 101. The AI Office performs two distinct functions: first, direct supervision of GPAI model providers — typically the multinational companies developing large language models — and second, coordinating the living repository of practices, the Code of Practice, and AI literacy Q&A materials, which are non-binding but practically significant soft-law documents. The AI Board is a separate body: it coordinates among national authorities but likewise does not decide individual cases. For a Hungarian SME, the AI Office is therefore mainly relevant as a secondary source — its guidance and Q&A materials provide orientation, but the actual proceedings take place before the national authority.

Why this matters for an EU SME

A Hungarian company should not approach the AI Office for its matters, but the Hungarian market surveillance authority — the AI Office's materials (Q&A, living repository) are, however, a useful, free source of orientation.
